    Responsibilities

    SUMMARY

    The Senior Product Development Scientist will be responsible for leading new product and process development for Califia Farms portfolio of plant-based beverage products. He/She is accountable for delivering new and exciting prototypes and process technologies for scale-up and commercialization of naturally tasty and nutritious products that meet the needs of Califia Farms’ environmental and socially conscious consumers. The Senior PD Scientist is expected to leverage their technical expertise and project management skills to successfully deliver innovation and technology projects to the agreed upon objectives with a sense of urgency and cost consciousness. He/She is also expected to proactively assess new ingredient and process technologies for their potential to deliver innovative new product platforms and competitive insulation for Califia Farms.

     

    JOB DUTIES

     

    Product/Process Development (approximately 70%)

    • Emphasis will be on the development and management of new plant-based food products and processes for Califia Farms categories of Plant Milks, Cultured Products, Juices, Cold Brew Coffees and Creamers. Characteristics of importance:
      • Hands-on experience and strong interest in the development of new products is essential – from concept development to final product
      • Ability to define important key development issues and to execute rapid prototyping. 
      • A self-starter and strong team player wanting to work in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
    • Conducts internal sensory evaluations to determine acceptability of product
    • Creates and maintains formulations, product specifications, processes, and testing procedures
    • Conducts lab experiments and line trials within the manufacturing facilities to ensure accuracy of process and quality of product
    • Stays current on new food processing technologies
    • Collaborates with Marketing to develop new products that match targeted consumer preferences
    • Proactively identifies and drives awareness on product improvement, cost reduction and efficiency improvement opportunities across our core product portfolio.
    • Effectively executes and delivers assigned projects aimed at improving top line sales and/or gross margins across the Califia product portfolio

    Project Management (approximately 30%)

    • Experienced project manager, well versed in working with management, marketing, sales, operations & production to assure product development timely progress and the co-ordination & execution of new product launches, including:
      • Rapidly resolving “roadblocks” in product development & product launches
      • Confirming that labeling conforms to FDA/USDA standards
      • Providing or determining regulatory inputs for new products

     

    Qualifications

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Master degree or higher in Food Science/Technology or Chemical Engineering (with significant prior experience with food processing)
    • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills in prior R&D and Product Development roles

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • A minimum of 10 years of experience in significant new food product developments and the successful commercialization of new food products

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Prior experience in working with plant based products not essential, but familiarity with plant-based ingredients and processing is desired
    • Prior experience working with aseptic beverage processes and other thermal processing and pasteurizing technologies for ESL beverages and food products
