Overview

The Secondary Packaging Operator is responsible for safely operating and monitoring secondary packaging equipment to support efficient production flow while maintaining quality, safety, and food safety standards. This role supports packaging operations by operating and monitoring equipment such as cap applicators, accumulation systems, conveyors, case packers, palletizers, and associated equipment. The Secondary Packaging Operator helps ensure product quality, equipment performance, and continuous production flow while adhering to established operating procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and company safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor secondary packaging equipment, including automated packaging systems.
  • Ensure package integrity and compliance with product quality specifications.
  • Maintain continuous product flow between filling and packaging operations to minimize downtime and prevent line stoppages or product backups.
  • Perform start-up, operation, changeover, and shutdown procedures for assigned packaging equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Monitor equipment performance and make minor adjustments to maintain efficiency and product quality.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of packaging equipment and escalate complex issues to Maintenance or Production leadership as appropriate.
  • Inspect products for defects, including cap placement, case adjustment and bond damaged packaging, or product inconsistencies, and remove non-conforming products as needed.
  • Coordinate with Filler Operators, Packaging Line Operators, and Production leadership to support balanced line flow and operational efficiency.
  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of equipment and assigned work areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of assigned production areas and equipment.
  • Accurately complete production records, downtime and quality documentation as required.
  • Communicate equipment performance, downtime events, and operational concerns to team members and leadership.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Production, Quality, Warehouse, and Maintenance.
  • Attend and actively participate in shift pass downs, team meetings, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Respond to equipment issues and production needs during the shift.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Follow GMP, HACCP, Food Safety, SOP, and Injury & Illness Prevention Program requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing, food production, or packaging environment preferred.
  • Experience operating conveyor, packaging, cap application, or automated production equipment preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
  • Ability to perform basic documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and basic production equipment.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions in an industrial manufacturing environment, with or without reasonable accommodation, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds as required.
  • Ability to successfully complete and maintain required equipment-specific training, certifications, and operational qualifications.

This position is classified as Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime). The expected hourly rate for this position is between $21.00 – $26.00 per hour based on a full-time schedule.
